Wheelchair Drive Wheels: What Is a Keyway and Why Does It Matter?

Wheelchair Drive Wheels: What Is a Keyway and Why Does It Matter?

13th Oct 2026

If you’re shopping for a replacement power wheelchair wheel, you may see terms like “drive wheel,” “with keyway,” or “no keyway.”

The difference is easy to spot once you know what to look for.

What Is a Keyway?

A keyway is a straight slot or notch inside the center hub of the wheel.

That slot matches a key on the motor shaft, helping the wheel lock into the powered drive setup so the motor can turn the wheel.

If your current wheel has that slot, you’ll need a replacement with the correct keyway.

Does “Drive Wheel” Usually Mean Keyway?

In many power wheelchair listings, the term drive wheel is often used instead of specifically saying keyway.

That’s because a true power chair drive wheel typically needs a keyed hub so it can connect properly to the motor shaft.

So if a listing says drive wheel, it may not always spell out keyway, but in many cases that is exactly what it means.

What Does “No Keyway” Mean?

A wheel without a keyway usually has a standard round bearing in the center instead of a keyed hub opening.

So when you look at the middle of the wheel:

  • Keyway / drive wheel: straight slot or notch inside the hub
  • No keyway: standard round bearing with no keyway slot

This makes the two styles much easier to tell apart visually.

Why Does It Matter?

Even if two wheels are the same diameter and look similar from the outside, the center hub can be completely different.

A wheel designed for a keyed motor shaft needs the correct keyway. A wheel with a standard bearing and no keyway is not the same setup.

That’s why you should never choose a replacement wheel by outside size alone.

Before You Order

Check:

  • Keyway or standard bearing
  • Hub or bore size
  • Wheel size
  • Wheelchair make and model
  • Original part number, if available

If you’re unsure, take a clear photo of the center hub of your existing wheel.

Check the center. Match the hub style. Order the right wheel.
