But where did Disability Pride Month begin?

The observance traces its roots back to July 26, 1990, when the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, was signed into law. The ADA was a landmark civil rights law that prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities and helped expand access to employment, transportation, education, public spaces, and everyday life.

Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July because of this historic milestone. Since then, it has become an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made while recognizing that accessibility and inclusion continue to evolve.

What Does Disability Pride Mean?

Disability Pride is not about celebrating the challenges that disability can bring.

The Disability Pride Flag

One of the most recognizable symbols of Disability Pride is the Disability Pride Flag.

The flag features five diagonal stripes across a black background. The diagonal design represents breaking through barriers and moving beyond the obstacles people with disabilities have historically faced.

Each stripe represents a different part of the disability community:

• Red represents physical disabilities.
• Gold represents neurodiversity.
• White represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.
• Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
